Baby Walkers in Kenya
Kashwa – April 22, 2005 The Guardian on Tuesday reported that Uganda’s parliament is expected to vote on a bill to allow a “mass” census of Kenyan voters. This week, Kenyan judges denied an extension of a landmark ruling by the Supreme Judicial Court that sealed hundreds of thousands of Kenyan voters’ will votes without their knowledge. The Supreme Court ruled that all Kenyan citizens can be identified as Kenyan citizens without having submitted fingerprints. While this is a step into a new age of privacy, it is important to remember that as long as people have a right to vote, it is a right that does not extend to Africans. The government does not fully recognize African rights, and it refuses to grant Kenyan citizens an equal vote. The legal status of all Kenyan citizens is often subject to constitutional uncertainty, not least because it is also extremely difficult to ascertain, let alone prove, this citizenship even exists.
Tanzania – April 1, 2005 The BBC’s Lucy Jones, who reports on the human rights situation in Tanzania, said that there are no laws that criminalize discrimination against Africans in any way, let alone in the name of equality. She also said that it takes a great deal of courage for African people to be given the same freedom that the majority of African citizens are given of African citizenship, and to be held in check over that, as well as the stigma that accompanies being asked to register as a Kenyan.
