The world’s largest consumer of seafood in 2016 was in Japan, according to the World Market Center’s Food & Drink Institute. And in the United States, seafood exports have been booming despite a recent glut — with $2 billion in imports, and an unprecedented growth rate. In 2012 and 2013, Japan accounted for about half of the world’s seafood exports, up from about 50 per cent for a decade prior. More than half of the world’s seafood export goes to China, and over the past five years, U.S. exports of seafood in the U.S. have risen to more than $2 billion, nearly double those of Europe.
